"The tragedy of love is not that we grieve, but that we cease to grieve, and then perhaps the dead are dead at last"
"He knew that it didn't make for an equal relationship, that a constant uncritical kindness could in its subtle condescension be as oppressive to the loved one as cruelty or neglect. Was this how he bolstered his ego, by the knowledge that he was needed, depended upon, admired for a compassion which when he looked at it with honest eyes was a particularly subtle form of emotional patronage and spiritual pride? Was he any better than Gerard, for whom sex was part of his personal power game...."

The second paragrapgh puts into words what I have felt for a long time, but did not know how to express it.
So, neglect and indifference are at par with constant uncritical kindness, compassion and emotional patronage ?!
Hmmm....
Can I ever love again?
Can I ever accept being loved again?

I wouldn't want to use that line so harshly, especially since I remember the context of the story.
But yes, unrelenting goodness is as unnatural and damaging as evil can be. It can actually cause more of a burden on the other person because one cant react on the surface and hence reactions simmer under the surface and boil up over time. typical examples - people's reaction to charity and pity is always resentful, despite the supposed good intentions of the actions.
